Figure 12. Because juvenile Collared Pratincoles do not have fully grown outer rectrices, the wing tip/tail tip position cannot be used to distinguish them from Oriental Pratincoles. In adult (especially male) Collared, the tip of the wing extends about to the tip of the tail; in Oriental, the wing tips fall several millimeters past the tip the tail (as in the Guadeloupe birds). This aspect can be difficult to study in the field and difficult to photograph, as the bird needs to be at rest in a plane perpendicular to the camera lens (cf. Figure 6).
