In the Trans-Pecos, the frst Cassin's Finches were reported from the Guadalupe Mountains, Culberson 30 Oct (CRu) and from the Davis Moun - tains, Jeff Davis 25 Nov (M&ME). More unexpected was a female Cassin's at Re - saca de la Palma S.P., Cameron 16-17 Nov (ph. MBS). Three Red Crossbills were at Lubbock 22 Nov (AHe), with one pres - ent through 30 Nov (MG). A group of 17 Pine Siskins wandered s. to South Padre Island, Cameron 9 Nov (MHi). American Goldfnches arrived very early; the most noteworthy singles were at Austin, Travis 17 Aug (ph. JW, LW), near Center, Shelby 18 Aug (ph. SO), and at Pearland, Brazo - ria 5 Sep (AW). An Evening Grosbeak at Lubbock 30 Nov (MG) continued a re - cent trend of increasing sightings of this very rare visitor. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak was w. to El Paso 3 Oct (BZ). A Black-headed Grosbeak was e. of normal at Lake Mineral Wells S.P., Parker 11 Sep (PB). A Lazuli Bunting was a rare fnd at Gulf Coast B.O., Brazoria 4-5 Oct (CeR, JF et al.). A Varied Bunting lingered in the Basin, Big Bend N.P., Brewster 26 Nov (MF). Bobolinks are casual fall migrants in Tex - as; one was near Underwood, Hale 20 Sep (AHe, RKo) and another at Packery Channel, Nueces 18 Oct (WS, ShC). An extremely large count of 225 Western Meadowlarks came from Lake Tawakoni, Rains 14 Nov (RKi). A Yellow-headed Blackbird wandered to Lake Somerville, Burleson 27 Nov (AN). A group of 60 Brewer's Blackbirds made an early arrival at Morgan's Point, Harris 25 Oct (NR). A late Orchard Oriole was reported from Galveston Island S.P., Galveston 30 Nov (RPe et al.). A male Bullock's Oriole in McKelligon Canyon, El Paso 1 Oct (BZ) was late. A Scott's Oriole at Corpus Christi, Nueces 20 Sep (ML, WS, KBa, AC) provided a frst county record; farther up the coast, one was reported from Powderhorn Ranch, Calhoun 21 Oct (RKo). Another outstanding fnd of the season, a Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch was near Dal - hart, Dallam 20-21 Nov (ph. DBr, LBr, BP), the frst for Texas. Cassin's Finch made news in the Panhandle and South Plains with a minimum of 3 birds at Palo Duro Canyon S.P., Randall between 4 Oct and 1 Nov (MD, JSb, m.ob.), 2 at Farwell, Parmer 18 Oct The winter range of American Tree Sparrow has retreated in Texas to the point that the species is now expected only in the Panhandle.
