February turned cold, with most of Wyoming and the eastern two-thirds of Colorado below average, but with the Green and Bear again above average, as was western Colorado. As for precipitation, the winter was above normal in most of Wyoming, as was the South Platte drainage in Colorado. The Arkansas drainage and the San Luis Valley, were unfor- tunately both below normal. The southeastern half of Colorado experienced below-normal December precipitation, while much of west- ern Wyoming was above. January presented an incredible hodge-podge of haves and have- nots: the Green and Bear drainage was much below normal, Wyoming's Yellowstone and Snake drainages and the San Luis Valley were below normal, Wyoming's Platte and Colorado's Republican and Arkansas drainages were above normal, and the South Platte drainage experi- O verall, this season exhibited average temperatures, although northern and eastern Wyoming were below aver- age and southwestern Wyoming and western Colorado were above average. Interestingly, that was nearly an exact fip-fop from the pre- vious winter. Despite this overall mediocrity, the Christmas Bird Count season was ham- pered by cold temperatures that froze most open water in both states, particularly due to an early blast of frigid weather (Denver's low on 5 December was -15˚ F; 21 ˚F is the average low). In December, only the Green and Bear and Wind River drainages in Wyoming and the Republican drainage in Colorado experienced even average temperatures, as most of the Region was below average, and with Colorado's San Luis Valley much below average. January's temperature regime moderated, balancing December's cold, with only the Green and Bear drainage having temperatures much Tony Leukering Matt Fraker –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Colorado & Wyoming
